As 2017 line-up of Ram HD pickup trucks is already refreshed, there is a low probability for a major overhaul anytime soon. But, the recent reports of a 2018 Ram 2500 test model now bring a whole lot of possibilities and curiosity.
The spy shots which show a Ram 2500 test mule on open roads capture an interesting bit of information and that is the Cummins inscription. Yes, this model doesn’t wear any Ram testing facility stickers which suggest some significant changes under the hood.
2018 Ram 2500 – Specs
The makers might use an updated diesel engine in the new Ram 2500 for achieving monstrous outputs. This significant powertrain change also comes obviously as General Motors and Ford have already surpassed the class leading 900 lb-ft of torque produced by Ram’s 6.7 liter Cummins 4 cylinder mill.
Ram will surely work to improve torque as well as power for coming on par or even surpassing competitors. Experts have predicted that 2018 Ram 2500 could be the 1st commercial vehicle to produce a torque of 1,000 lb-ft.
To achieve such outputs figures, Ram will have to make improvements on the transfer case, transmission system and other related powertrain components. This also means that an updated powertrain platform will be used as the axles have to be modified for coping with this extra monstrous torque. Doing such might even add up towing capacity which will outrival the 32,500 pound offered by Ford F-Series Super Duty.
Going again with the spy shots, a heavy disguise is done on the test model’s front fascia. This leads to believe that the makers will finally drop the signature cross-hair grille in 2018 Ram 2500. Therefore, a new grille which will make its way into the front fascia should be designed to provide sufficient air supply to the updated diesel engine.
Although the test model doesn’t include hood scoop, final production Ram 2500 might incorporate it. The test model’s hood also show impressive bulges which will definitely add up aggressive stance.
Other than this, body styles should come in 3 different options including Wagon, Regular Cab and Crew Cab. Trims would include Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, Tradesman, Longhorn and Limited.
Apart from capturing exterior camouflage, the spy shots were not pretty conspicuous about the interior cabin. Fortunately, one image shows that things will remain pretty same inside this upcoming 2018 Ram 2500. But to mark a generational change, subtle refinements over the dash and central console is expected.
Technology wise, a trailer monitoring system will be featured for the driver’s convenience and rear bench seats could be improved from comfort and luxury aspects. According to the image, new chrome trims have been used on the door panels and central console.
Release Date and Price
As Ram is reported to be working on making improvements on the prototype model, the final 2018 Ram 2500 could be released during 1st quarters of 2018. As far as price is concerned, the new Ram 2500 will add up 10 to 20% over the current pricing.
